Q

What is the Frontal Lobe used for?

A

Planning, self-awareness, movement, attention, personality emotions and behaviour. It also controls out hand-eye coordination.

Q

What is the cerebral cortex and what does it do?

A

It is the bumpy bit on the outside of your brain.
It holds our consciousness and out use of problem solving, perception, learning, memory, thinking and control of the motor.

11
Q

What is the Primary Somatosensory Cortex and where is it?

A

In the Parietal Lobe.

It processes sensory information from receptors in the body.

Q

What does the Amygdala do?

A

Linking emotions to memory:

Think of Amy remembering the doctor after the universe collapsed

15
Q

Define Hemispheric Speculation

A

The belief that each hemisphere is specialised in certain functions.
Eg.
Left: mathematical and verbal functions
Right: creative and non-verbal functions

16
Q

What is the spinal cord?

A

A cable-like column of nerve fibres which sends messages to the muscles in the limb.

17
Q

What is spinal reflex?

A

Involuntary and possibly lifesaving reflex that does not need a message to be sent to the the brain. It is a reflex done in order to avoid danger and is reflected back into the muscle when danger is present. (Eg. A hot cup)

18
Q

What happens when you get Spinal Cord Damage?

A

When the spinal cord is damaged, the brain looses control over that limb or part of the body.

19
Q

What is Aphasia defined as?

A

A language disorder shown in speech, writing or reading. It is caused by injury to the brain.

20
Q

What happens in Fluent Aphasia?

A

Speech is fluent (hence FLUENT aphasia), but there are problems with auditory process or in words spoken by others.

21
Q

What happens in non-fluent aphasia?

A

Auditory verbal comprehension is good, but speech is hard

22
Q

What is pure aphasia?

A

Pure aphasia is when there are problems in reading, writing or the recognition of words.

23
Q

What is the Primary Visual Cortex in charge of?

A

Processing information from the retinas. The left half is sent to the right visual field while the right is sent to the left.

24
Q

What happens if you get spinal cord damage?

A

The brain looses connection and control over the part of the body below the spinal cord damage.

25
Q

What is Spacial Neglect?

A

When a person neglects either the left or right hand side of their world. They will not acknowledge that, that side of their body is actually there, but they can still walk.

26
Q

When is there a problem is someone is doing a Spacial neglect test?

A

If the information goes through to the right hemisphere of the brain (left visual field).

27
Q

What is the PNS?

A

PNS= Peripheral Nervous System
It is the complete network of the neurons located outside the CNS.
It extends from the top of the head to the toes.

28
Q

What is the Autonomic Nervous System?

A

It is the network that connects the CNS to the internal organs and glands

29
Q

What is the Somatic Nervous System?

A

It carries messages from the sensory receptors to the CNS, and motor messages to the skeletal muscles.

30
Q

What is the Sympathetic Nervous System?

A

It prepares the body in a response to the possible threat; activates the body.

31
Q

What does the Parasympathetic Nervous System do?

A

Relaxes the body after Sympathetic Nervous System activation.
