The Cell Cycle Flashcards
What are the three stages of the cell cycle?
Interphase
Mitosis
Cytokinesis
What is interphase?
The stage where the cell performs normal functions and copies its genetic material to prepare for cell division
What is cytokinesis?
Cytokinesis is the final stage of cell division. The cytoplasm divides, producing two genetically identical daughter cells.
What is mitosis?
Mitosis is the stage of the cell cycle in which the DNA in the nucleus is divided; the first part of cell division.
What are the four phases of mitosis?
Prophase, Metaphase, Metaphase, Telophase
What is the prophase?
The first phase of mitosis, in which the chromosomes become visible and the nuclear membrane dissolves.
Each copy consists of two identical strands called chromatids.
What is the metaphase?
The second phase of mitosis, in which the chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell.
Spindle fibres are formed during late interphase and control the movement of the chromosomes.
What is the anaphase?
The third phase of mitosis, in which the sister chromatids separate into daughter chromosomes, and each moves toward the opposite ends of the cell.
What is the telophase?
The final phase of mitosis, in which the chromatids unwind and a nuclear membrane reforms around the chromosomes at each end of the cell.
