The control of heart rate Flashcards
1
Q
Medulla oblongata
A
Cardiac control centre
- linked through 2 nervous systems
2
Q
Sympathetic nervous control
A
- stimulation of SA node via the accelerator nerve
- heart beat is faster, increases heart rate
3
Q
Parasympathetic nervous control
A
stimulation via the vagus nerve
- decreases heart rate
4
Q
Neural control (chemo,baro,proprio)
A
Chemoreceptors
- sense chemical changes and are located in the medulla oblongata.
- when exercising there is a decrease in PH levels.
5
Q
Baroreceptors
A
- detect changes in blood pressure
- blood pressure increases = sympathetic stimulation
- blood pressure decreases = parasympathetic stimulation
6
Q
Proprioceptors
A
- positioned in muscles and detect changes in movement and tension in muscles
- increased tension = more blood needed to contract the muscle.
7
Q
Hormonal control of the heart
A
- release of adrenaline which acts on the SA node by stimulating a greater rate of contraction.
8
Q
Intrinsic control of the heart
A
- Temperature changes
- Venous Return
