Section 15: advising the coroner.
The police have a duty to report the death immediately to the coroner.
Section 13:
Death that must be reported are
Scumbie
SUICIDE
CAUSE unknown or no doctor’s cert issued
UNNATURAL or violent
MEDICAL or surgical or dental operation or procedure.
BIRTH deaths or deaths that appear to be result of pregnancy or giving birth
INSTITUTIONAL deaths In police custody, CYPFS,
ENACTMENT requires the holding if an inquest mental health act CYPFS act. Corrections act.
Postmortems
Examination of a persons body to determine the course of death. A postmortem is authorized by the coroner
The coroner conducts an inquest to establish the following…
What established/had documented
The fact that a person has died
Deceased person certificate
The identity of the deceased
Deceased person identification form
The cause if death
Pathologists report
Where and when the death occurred Police 47 (report to coroner)
The circumstances of death
Statements, job sheets, depositions
The coroner must hold an inquiry into the following deaths:
SIC
Suicide
Institutional deaths
Coroner is not studied that the cause or circumstances of death have been clearly established.
Inquests may be held;
- Was the course of death natural or not
- unnatural or violent deaths
- public concerns, rumor, suspicions
- The desires of the immediate family
