1
Q

What happened at the End of Reconstruction?

A

• Grant wanted to run for a third term. Republican Party nominate Hayes because of Grant’s scandals.
• Disputed Election of 1876: Rutherford B. Hayes v. Samuel Tilden. Both moderate in policies. Tilden won Florida, Louisiana and South Carolina which made him president but the Republicans disqualified these votes. Fraud on both sides.
• Compromise of 1877: Commission to sort out the crisis. 15 members: 7 Republicans, 7 Democrats, 1 Independent. Deadlock. Independent resigns, Republican brought in, Hayes wins.
• Negotiations: Federal troops removed from South. Provision of federal aid and to back railroads. Promised to treat all freed men fairly but no one could enforce it. Ends Reconstruction because legislation needed to
implement the 14th and 15th Amendment were now removed.
