The endocrine pancreas Flashcards
What is the glucostatic theory?
Food intake is determined by blood glucose
What is the lipostatic theory?
Food intake is determined by fat stores
What is output?
Processes performed to maintain life as well as any voluntary action
3 categories are cellular, mechanical and heat loss
What is cellular ouput?
Transporting molecules across membranes
Growth/repair
Storage of energy
What is mechanical output?
Movement
What is heat loss output?
Associated with cellular and mechanical work
Accounts for about half of output
What is metabolism?
Extracting storing and utilising energy from nutrients
What does it mean that the brain is an obligatory glucose utiliser?
First dibs on glucose
Can’t metabolise carbs, proteins or FFA’s
May sometimes metabolise ketone bodies in extreme circumstances
How is blood glucose maintained?
Synthesising glucose from glycogen or amino acids
What is the normal range for blood glucose?
4.2-6.3 mM
When are we hypoglycaemic?
Blood glc <3mM
Only brain can access glucose under 4.2mM
How does glucagon affect blood glucose levels?
Increases
How does insulin affect blood glucose levels?
Decreases
Where is glucagon produced?
Pancreas
Does the liver need insulin for glucose uptake?
No
Uses GLUT2 and GLUT4
