The Endocrine System Flashcards
Endocrine system
Consists of a series of glands that produce chemical substances known as hormones.
Behavioral endocrinology
The study of psychology and the endocrine system—scientific study of the interaction between hormones and behavior.
Bidirectional interaction
Hormones influence behavior and behavior can sometimes influence hormone concentrations.
Pituitary gland
Comes from the hypothalamus at the base of the brain—called “master gland” because it’s messenger hormones control all other glands in the endocrine system (mostly carried out instructions from the hypothalamus).
Thyroid gland
Located in the neck, releases hormones that regulate growth, metabolism, and appetite.
Adrenal glands
On top of kidneys—secretes hormones involved in the stress response. (Epinephrine: adrenaline—norepinephrine: noradrenaline).
Pancreas
Internal organ that regulates blood sugar levels
Gonads
Secretes sexual hormones—important for reproduction and mediates both sexual motivation and behavior.
