Q

How did Pasteur’s assistant help find vaccinations

A

Pasteur’s team was experimenting on chicken cholera. Then his assistant went on holiday leaving a culture exposed. When he returned he injected that culture to the chickens. When there was no reaction they reinjected it was a fresh batch but nothing happened. Pasteur understood this and this helped pave a way to develop vaccinations on other vaccines.

Q

How did Koch and Pasteurs work on vaccines combine

A

Pasteur in 1881 using his and Koch’s work publicly vaccinated cows and sheep against anthrax and they didn’t die.

Q

What did Koch do with his understanding after developing methods to study diseases with anthrax

A

He and his team in Berlin identified the microorganisms causing cholera in 1883 and tuberculosis in 1882. Also were the first to experiment with using agar jelly to grow cultures. Finally he started using chemical dyes to dye microorganisms to make it easier to study them under microscoeps

Q

What was Pasteur and Koch’s relationship like?

A

They were rivals of some sort, as during the period of their investigations in vaccines Germany and France were at war. Both governments backed them with funding. Though they didn’t work together but they published them in scientific journals where they could build off each others work. Such as with the development of the anthrax vaccine.

Q

What did Koch invent in 1878

A

A steam sterilizer to kill microorganisms for medical equipment. this was built off his rival Pasteur’s work on heat killing microorganisms

13
Q

What effect did understanding of microorganisms increasing have on operation rooms

A

new techniques appeared and surgeons were attempting to prevent microorganisms getting anywhere near a open wound. Other than the sterilization of equipment and wound, surgeons wore clean clothes, put masks over their mouths, wore rubber gloves, and there were no longer any spectators

14
Q

What was Lister experimenting with outside of antiseptic techniques

A

Around 1880 he was experimenting with options to solve the issue of blood loss as pain and infection were now solved. Previously open vessels were closed by either cauterization or tied close by ligatures but would become hard and could become a new source of infection. Then he found cat gut

15
Q

What were some benefits of using catgut for blood loss

A

It was less likely to cause infection, could dissolve in the body after surgery, and others.

16
Q

In the 1880s what other solutions were being found for pain

A

While chloroform was still widely used there were a number of deaths this made scientists search for a better anaestethic. They found cocaine.

17
Q

Why were some surguries using cocaine

A

It was used as a local anaestethic to numb a body part while the patient remained concious and a safer version was developed in 1905

18
Q

What changes in operating rooms from 1875 to 1905

A

Surgeons wore clean gowns, equipment was now sterilized, local anaestethic is used, patient is covered to prevent germs entering wound, and surgeon wears gloves
