The Heart Flashcards
Pericardium (Heart Wall)
double walled sac, it encloses the heart.
- allows beating of heart w/ out friction
- room expansion, not excessive
- location: inferiorly to the diaphragm and anteriorly to the sternum
Fibrous Layer (Pericardium, heart wall)
superficial layer of Pericardium
- dense CT
- protects and anchors heart
- prevents overstretching
Serous Layer (Pericardium, heart wall)
deep and thin layer of Pericardium
- produces serous fluid
Parietal Pericardium (sub-parts of serous pericardium)
outer layer of serous pericardium.
- fused w/ inner portion of fibrous layer
Visceral Pericardium/ Epicardium (sub parts of Serous Pericardium)
inner layer of serous pericardium.
- directly on the surface of the heart. Closer/ touches to the heart.
Pericardial Cavity
space inside pericardial sac
- filled with serous fluid
Chambers of the heart
4
- Right Atrium
- Left Atrium
- Right Ventricles
- Left Ventricles
Atria (atrium sing.)
A before V
Right and Left
- Two superior (above) chambers
- Receive Blood returning to the heart*
Ventricles
A before V
Right and Left
- Two inferior (below) chambers
- Pumps blood into arteries*
Sulci of the heart
grooves on surface of heart
- contains coronary (heart) blood vessels and fat
Coronary Sulcus
makes the boundary between atria and ventricles
