A
  • Japan had a large army/ navy and had controlled South Manchurian railway territory since 1905
  • in sept 1931 it used disturbance as an excuse to capture the town of Mukden, and send troops to take over the rest of Manchuria
  • the Japanese pretended to give manchuria independence
  • a weak leader was put in charge so that they could control him
  • the Lytton report was produced

  • said the japanese had been wrong. the league did nothing about this
  • Japan refused to accept it. they left the league in 1933

how was the league weakened after the manchuria crisis?

A
  • they didn’t want to punish japan as it was an important trading partner
  • France and Britain were occupied with their own issues like Hitler. They wouldn’t commit money or troops bc of the depression
  • showed dictators like Hitler how weak the league was
  • everyone saw the league fail to deal with its first real challenge.
