The nervous System Flashcards
State the role of the nervous system.
Controls and coordinates function of our surroundings using receptors and effectors.
What body parts consist of the Central nervous system?
Brain and spinal cord
Why is the spinal cord important within the CNS?
It is important for reflex actions.
What does the brain do within the CNS?
The brain has sensory inputs that are processed and responses are carried out.
What is the peripheral nervous system?
The PNS consists of all sensory neurons that connects receptors with the CNS to motor neurones.
State what the term neurone means.
Nerve cell
What does the term nerves mean?
A bundle of neurones.
True or false, motor neurons transmit nerve impulses in one direction.
True.
What is a dendrite?
When a neuron receives input from another cell.
What is a cell body?
A cell body contains a nucleus and other organelles.
What is the role of an axon?
To carry nerve impulses from the cell body.
What do myelin sheath contain?
Schwann cells
State what schwann cells are.
Specialized cells that wrap around the axon.
What are the small gaps between Schwann cells called?
Nodes of Ranvier.
State what nodes of ranvier and myelin sheath help increase.
Helps increase the rate at which a nerve impulse is sent along the axon.
