Q

Why did the first Balkan War happen in 1912 and what was the outcome?

A

The Balkan League attacked Turkey - they won and Russia supported their actions. Austria feels threatened so at a conference in 1913 Albania is created and given to them to prevent the League from getting access to the sea.

16
Q

Why did the second Balkan War occur in 1913 and what was the outcome?

A

The League fell out - Serbs and Czechs take Bulgaria, doubling Serbia’s size. Then attack Austrian Albania and are given ultimatum by Austria AND Germany and they give in and leave. BUT Serbia is still a threat to Austria, and it’s main rival.

17
Q

What was the Zabern affair and when was it?

A

1913 - German troops in Zabern ordered to “clear the streets” and 28 French are arrested. Widespread protests. Kaiser backs officials, as does Bethmann. Vote of no confidence passed by Reichstag - Bethmann remains due to being in Kaiser’s favour.

18
Q

When, where and why was Franz Ferdinand assassinated?

A

28th June 1914 in Sarajevo, because he was the heir to the Austrian throne and therefore left-wing Serbian terrorists opposed him.

19
Q

Who issued who a “blank cheque” on 5th July 1914 and why?

A

Germany issued one to Austria, because Austria wanted revenge on Serbia for killing their heir and Germany was the ally, willing to do anything to help them with their cause.

20
Q

When did the Austrians give ultimatum to Serbia and why did it take so long?

A

23rd July - because there was a language barrier with the Hungarians and their Emperor was very old and careful with his decisions!

21
Q

Why and when did Austria declare war on Serbia?

A

28th July - because Serbia rejected one of the terms on the ultimatum (to give Austrian police access to Serbian territory).

22
Q

Why did Germany declare war on Russia on the 1st August?

A

Because Russia started to partially mobilised a couple of days before to protect Serbia, and Germany warned if they did not stop they too would mobilise to support Austria. They didn’t stop - war was declared.

23
Q

Where did Germany have to invade first to implement the Schlieffen Plan and who did this aggravate?

A

Belgium - in order to get to France. This upset Britain as Belgium was neutral and France was their ally.

24
Q

When did the First World War truly start and why?

A

4th August 1914 - because Britain declared war on Germany and therefore the vast majority of Europe was now in war.
