What is a group?
Consists of 2+ individuals who percieve themselves to belong to a group with shared goals (Johnson & Johnson, 1987)
Individuals interact and influence each other, join to achieve common goals and share common set of norms and rules
What is group behaviour?
Behaviour conflict and social identity within the group (intragroup) and between groups (intergroup)
What is intragroup behaviour?
Perception, cognition and behaviour that is influenced by peoples recognition that they and others are members of a distinct social group (Hogg & Vaughn)
What is intergroup behaviour?
typically competitive/ hostile as people favour their own group and don’t identify with the other groups - not always
Where groups exits there will always be in group and out group
What is intergroup behaviour and culture?
The dimensions of group orientation vs individual orientation culture is particulars relevant to intergroup behaviour (Shin et al 2013)
What is group formation and norms?
People join groups in order to achieve foals, maintain positive self-concept, reduce self-uncertainties, avoid loneliness etc
Key characteristics of groups are roles, statuses and norms. They determine the relationship of power within and between groups
What is group cohesiveness?
A group that effectively bind people to one another and to the group ass a whole, giving the group a sense of solidarity and oneness (Hogg & Vaughn 2008)
What are the characteristics of group cohesiveness?
Uniformity of conduct and effectiveness in actions ]
In group solidarity and cooperation
Mutual acceptance and support between members
Conformity to group norms
Low levels of cohesiveness = weak group
