Thermodynamics Flashcards
What is a system
A set of interconnected parts
Open system
One that exchanges matter and energy with its surroundings
Closed system
On that cannot exchange matter but can exchange energy with its surroundings
Isolated system
One that cannot exchange either matter or energy with its surroundings
First law
The total energy, including heat in a system remains constant
How can the energy of a system be increased
Heat can be added from its surroundings and work can be done on the system by its surroundings
How can the energy is a system decrease
Heat can flow out of a system to its surroundings, work can be done by a system in its surroundings.
Second law of thermodynamics
Heat always flows naturally from a hot object to a cold object, never the opposite
