The process of using one’s mind actively to form connected ideas
Prototypes
The best/most typical example of a group
Trial and Error
The process of experimenting with various methods of doing something until one finds the most successful
Algorithm
A logical, step-by-step procedure that, if followed correctly, will eventually solve a specific problem
Heuristic
A general rule-of-thumb or shortcut that is used to reduce the number of possible solutions to a problem. Usually speedier but more prone to errors than algorithms
Insight
A sudden realization of a problem’s solution; the “aha” moment
Creativity
The ability to think about a problem or idea in new and unusual ways, come up with unconventional solutions to problems
Intrinsic Motivation
The doing of an activity for its inherent satisfaction rather than for some separable consequence
Convergent Thinking
Looking for the “right answer”
Extrinsic Motivation
A motivation to participate in an activity based on meeting an external goal, garnering praise and approval, winning a competition, or receiving an award or payment
Divergent Thinking
Looking for a unique/creative answer
Representative Heuristic
Judging the likelihood of an event based on how well it matches a typical example
Availability Heuristic
Judging the likelihood of an event based on readily available personal experiences or new reports
Overconfidence Bias
The tendency to be more confident than correct
Belief Perseverance
Holding onto a belief even after it has been discredited
