Q

How Do You Evaluate Product Designs?

A

That really depends. I rely on the right KPIs and analytics tools to evaluate product designs. For example, we recently tracked XYZ.

Which resulted in a higher conversion rate or user engagement and we used …. Optimizely, Pendo, Mixpanel, Google Analytics for that particular project.

Q

What Would You Say is the Difference Between UX and Product Design?

A

Part 1 - The Set Up

You know it’s funny you asked me the question, because I have a lot of friends that are UX Designers AND PRODUCT Designers and the arguments they get into sometimes about this topic can get really heated. I have read that they are two different roles, BUT the reality is there is a lot of overlap. Organizations are increasingly mixing the two roles. Let me explain.

Part 2 - The Examples

So both UX Design and Product design adhere to the same Design Thinking processes of define, discover, ideate, validate, and all that good stuff, right?

Part 2 - The Examples

Now, I have heard Product Designers say… UX Designers on focus on the needs of the users, while Product Designers need to focus on both the needs of the user and the business. But, I have tons of UX designer friends that argue that they do that too.

Part 2 - The Examples

I have also heard that UX Designers spend most of their time developing products prior to launch, while Product Designers spend most of their time updating products that have already been launched.

Part 3 - The Follow Up

Q

What is Your Definition of Design Thinking?

A

Part 1 - The Set Up

When I think of designing thinking, the first thing that comes to my mind is… methodology or better yet a people first approach to solving complex problems that satisfies the needs and wants of any given stakeholder.

Part 2 - The Examples

Honestly, though your guess or anybody else’s guess is as good as mine and the reason why I say that is because, I have a bunch of friends that are UX and Product Designers and not even they can give me a straight answer.

Part 3 - The Follow Up

What’s your definition of design thinking?

PRO TIP

Hmmm… When I think of designing thinking, the first thing that comes to my mind is… methodology or better yet a people first approach to solving complex problems that satisfies the needs and wants of any given stakeholder.

Q

How Do You Test Product Designs?

A

Part 1 - The Set Up

I approach testing in a few different ways depending on what we are trying to achieve.

Part 2 - The Examples

Recently I led 2 projects on my team. I used “X” methodology to test for “Y” which resulted in “Z”. And on my other project I used “A” methodology to test for “B” which resulted in “C”.

Part 3- The Follow Up

The most important thing I keep in mind when approaching testing is making sure product design is ALIGNED (on the same page) with our business and/or marketing goals.

A

I use my user personas throughout the product design process, because it helps me better understand how our customers look for, purchase, and use our products.

Q

What’s Your Approach to Developing User Personas?

A

That’s a great question, because I recently spearheaded a new initiative a current company that accidentally helped us create 3 more user personas. So what kind of CRM do you guys use? Very cool! We use (ie Salesforce or Hubspot) at (current company name) and I recently took a look inside and realized there is a lot of data points or fields we either weren’t measuring before or left blank and it took us 45 days to do the cleanup (omg getting the sales team on board was a nightmare until they realized how more commission they could be making) but this resulted in our original user personas being only 5 to now 8.

We realized that we actually didn’t know our customers as well as we thought. I can’t go into specifics, but essentially we realized that since the pandemic there were an extra 3 different customer bases that had a need for us and we weren’t doing a good enough job marketing or servicing them.

Q

What’s Your Favorite Product?

A

OMG, my friends and I were just talking about this. Have you ever heard of this app called, Hinge? Literally, when the subject of how you met you girlfriend or boyfriend comes up when I go out, almost everybody is telling me it’s through this app. The most frustrating thing about dating is apps is either low quality people or low quantity of people, but the worse thing is you aren’t able to communicate with the person you are swiping on before you match. Hinge let’s me do that.

OMG, my friends and I were just talking about this. Have you ever heard of this app called, Simply Piano? I was out with my friends the other night and the subject of not having any time to learn new things came up and somebody told me about Simply Piano. Do you play an instruments yourself? I am sure you wanted to right? All I need to do is hop on the app on my iPhone or iPad for 15 to 20 minutes a day and in a month I can learn 1 to 2 new songs. And they have a huge list of songs I can learn to play.

OMG, my friends and I were just talking about this. Have you ever heard of this app called, iTalki? I was out with my friends the other night and the subject of not having any time to learn new things came up and somebody told me about iTalki. Have you ever wanted to learn a foreign language? I am sure you wanted to right? Italki let’s me schedule a 1 on 1 foreign language tutoring session for $5 to $8 an hour with a native speaker. Unlike the other language apps like Duolingo where I am only learning vocabulary, Italki let’s me practice speaking.
