Topic 1: Energy. Flashcards
Is energy used up?
Energy is never used up. It is instead transferred.
What are the 8 Main energy stores?
Thermal, Kinetic, Gravitational Potential, Elastic Potential, Chemical, Magnetic, Electrostatic, Nuclear.
What is the Power Definition?
Power is defined as the rate at which energy is transferred or the rate at which work is done.
How does lubrication help reduce energy waste?
Oil in a motor: It reduces Friction, so less energy is lost as heat through friction.
How does Thermal Insulation help reduce energy waste?
Double glazing, Less useful thermal energy is lost.
What does efficiency mean?
Efficiency is the ratio of the useful work done by the energy supplied to it.
How can the efficiency of a system be increased?
Reducing waste output, Recycling waste input.
What are the Non-Renewable energy resources?
Fossil Fuels, ( Coal Oil Gas ).
-Nuclear Fuel.
What are the Renewable Energy Resources?
Biofuel, Wind, Hydroelectricity, Geothermal, Tidal, Solar, Water Waves.
What is the definition of specific latent heat?
The amount of energy needed to raise the temp if 1kg of a substance by 1oC.
Give an example of energy transferred by heating.
Energy transferred to water by a kettles heating system. Energy goes to the waters thermal store.
