An Islamic prophet who spread and created the religion. After his death, the religion spread at lightning speed.
House of Wisdom
A library/learning center in Baghdad, Iraq.
Mamlucks
Ethnic Turks who were slaves and soldiers but later rose to beaurocrats. They had more freedom than other slaves at the time, leading to them eventually seizing control of Egypt.
Seljuk Turks
A Muslim community that conquered the Middle East and parts of China.
Sultan
The leader of the Seljuk Turks.
Mongols
An empire from central Asia that conquered the remaining Abbasid Empire in 1258. Mamlucks stopped their invasion of Africa.
Baghdad
A city in Iraq that is at the center of many trade routes at the time.
Abbasid Caliphate
An early Empire in the middle east. At their peak, they were as strong as China, but invasions eventually led to their downfall.
Nasir al-Din al-Tusi
A scientist and astronomer who created trigonometry, made accurate astronomical charts, headed an observatory, and studied connections between the sides and angles of triangles.
‘A’isha al-Ba’uniyyah
A Sufi master and poet; she wrote her own views of the world in her writing. She reflected on the contrast between most Muslims and the Sufis.
Sufis
They believed in a deeper connection to Allah. They weaved local religious beliefs into Islam when they were spreading the religion. The stressed introspection to connect to Allah, not just traditional study.
