Kin-based Networks
A social structure where families would live together in a group, and they stayed together as a tribe.
Chief
A chief was the leader of the tribe and dealt with things like disputes and neighboring groups.
Hausa Kingdoms
A kingdom before 1000 in Nigeria where the people formed seven connected city-states.
Trans-Saharan Trade
A trade route that crossed the Saharan desert.
Ghana
A kingdom that was located between the Sahara desert and the West Africa Coast with a centralized government and a king who ruled from their capital, Saleh.
Mali
A civilization that formed after the fall of Ghana. Historians believed that the founder was Muslim.
Zimbabwe
An empire in the 12th-15th century. Zimbabwe’s cities were surrounded by huge walls.
Indian Ocean Trade
The world’s largest sea-based system of communication and exchange before 1500. It stretched from China to Eastern Africa.
Swahili
A language formed when people in Africa combined Bantu and Arabic.
Great Zimbabwe
The main settlement of Zimbabwe. It eventually dissolved because of overgrazing.
Ethiopia
A Christian state called Axum whose rulers showed their power by building massive churches made entirely of stone.
Indian Ocean Slave Trade
A slave trade that was the largest of its time. It connected Africa and the Middle East.
Zanj Rebellion
A rebellion be the Zanj (African) and arab slaves in the middle east.
