Topic 2 (Mitosis) Flashcards
Why is mitosis used?
used to grow or to replace cells that have been damaged
What happens in interphase?
Increases the metal sub cellular structures such as mitochondria and ribosomes. It then duplicates its DNA. The DNA is copied and forms
X-shaped chromosome each chromosome is an exact duplicate of the other.
What happens in prophase?
The chromosomes condense and the membrane around the nucleus breaks down and the chromosomes lie free in the cytoplasm
What happens in metaphase?
The chromosomes line up at the centre of the cell
What happens at anaphase?
Spindle fibres pull the chromosomes apart then the chromatids are pulled to opposite ends of the cell.
What happens in telophase?
Membranes form around each of the set of chromosomes, these become the nuclei of the two new cells - the nucleus has divided.
What happens in cytokinesis?
The cytoplasm in the cell membrane divide to form two separate cells.
What does produced at the end of mitosis?
To genetically identical daughter cells which are diploid cells.
