A

As body growth is rapid, so they require a lot of energy from food, puberty is also the time when bones stop growing , and without sufficient calcium and phosphorus in the diet this will lead to weakening of bones causing osteoporosis and rickets later in life.

Why do pregnant women need iron in their diet

A

As iron is needed for the babies blood supply, as there is no iron found in milk, so it is needed on the babies liver as a store of iron. If the mother doesn’t get enough iron then she may get anaemia.

EAR- estimated average reference nutrient intake- the amount which any stated group of people, on average, will need
RNI- reference nutrient intake the amount of a nutrient which is enough for at least 97% of the population

What is the limitations of the figures of the DRV?

A

1.Intend to only asses the diets of groups of people not individuals
2.Apply only to healthy individuals- doesn’t not take into account special diets
3.By calling them reference values nutrient intake it is hoped that this is how they will be used and not taken as recommended

What is safe intake

A

Range for which there is not enough information to estimate RNI, EAR or LRNI. Sufficient for almost everyone but not so large as to cause undesirable effects.
