Gobi Desert
A desert in Asia, south of where the Mongols started.
Khan
The Mongol ruler, king. Leader of one of many tribes to start.
Genghis Khan
He was the leader who united the Mongol tribes and started the Mongol Empire.
Siege Weapons
Weapons used to get inside a city during a war.
Pax Mongolica
The peace that Mongolians bestowed upon their lands after conquering them. It stressed tolerance for religions and made trade routes safer. Meaning “Mongolian Peace”.
Uyghur Alphabet
This alphabet was used to try and unify the Mongolian empire in 1204. It never fully spread through the whole empire.
Batu Khan
A khan grandson who led his army into Russia and conquered it.
Golden Horde
The force that Batu Khan used to take over Russia.
Moscow
A city in Russia. The officials began to collect more taxes to build an army to fight against the Mongols. This army eventually drove out the invaders.
Helelgu Khan
The Khan grandson who conquered the Islamic lands.
Il-Khanate
The kingdom of Helelgu Khan that stretched from Byzantium to the Oxus River.
Kublai Khan
The third grandson of Genghis Khan who took over the Song Dynasty of China. Also known as the ‘great khan’.
Yuan Dynasty
The dynasty in China established by Kublai Khan.
White Lotus Society
A secret society that planned to overthrow the Yuan Dynasty.
Zhu Yuanzhang
The founder and emporer of the Ming Dynasty, which overthrew the Mongols.
