Divine right of kings
The social construct that Kings used to legitimize their rule in Europe. It stated that the king was appointed by god and to challenge him was to challenge god.
Justices of the peace
Officials chosen by the landed gentry whose job it was to keep the peace in England.
English Bill of Rights
An act signed by William III and Mary II that gave the parliament power over the monarchy.
Absolute
Rulers who had all of the power in the government.
Cardinal Richelieu
An advisor to Louis XIII and he was the Chief Minister.
Intendants
Royal officials that executed the will of the monarch.
Tax farmers
People who collect taxes for the government and they were not paid a salary, they were supposed to collect extra taxes from the people to survive.
Louis XIV
A French Monarch who built and ruled from Versailles. A very powerful ruler.
Versailles
The new French catle/government building built by Louis XIV. It was very opulent and a symbol of power. Government officials also lived here.
Boyars
The Russian nobility. Ivan the Terrible removed them from office.
Serfdom
The act of becoming tied to the land when you owe debts. A way to compensate for excessive debts.
Romanov Dynasty
The ruling power of Russia.
Peter I
A ruler of Russia who was a Romanov. He tried to assimilate Russia into European culture. He built the city of St. Petersburg.
Janissaries
Soldiers in the Ottoman Empire who were Christians taken from the Balkans.
Daimyo
Feudal lords of Japan who had armies of samurai and who were relatively autonomous.
