Martin Luther
A german monk who opposed some practices of the church.
Lutheranism
The strand of Christianity based on Martin Luther’s beliefs. They believed that the way to heaven is only through religious practices.
Indulgences
The system in the Church that if you paid the church a sum of money, all of your sins will be forgiven.
Simony
The practice of buying church positions.
The 95 Thesis
Martin Luther’s oppositions to the church, which he posted on the church door.
John Calvin
A French opposer to the Catholic Church.
Calvinism
The strand of Christianity that was based off of John Calvin’s beliefs.
Predestined
The outcome that was decided in advance by divine will or fate.
Puritans
English Protestants who were committed to “purifying” the Church of England by eliminating all aspects of Catholicism from religious practices.
Protestant Reformation
The Church spliting because of differences in belief from the Catholic Church.
Anglican Church
A church that the English King Henry VII formed.
Henry VIII
The King that had 6 wives and split England from the Catholic Church.
Anne Boleyn
The second wife of King Henry VIII. She was the reason Henry wanted to divorce his wife.
Charles V
The Holy Roman emperor who was a strong opposer of the Protestant Reformation.
Holy Synod
Ecclesiastical governing body created by Tsar Peter I in 1721 to head the Russian Orthodox Church.
