TOPIC 4: THERMAL PHYSICS Flashcards
1
Q
How does thermal energy transfer
A
from regions of high temperature to regions of low temperature
2
Q
Properties of conductors
A
- Conductors are materials that allow the free flow of electrons from one atom to another
- They conduct electricity because of the free electrons present
- They can pass electricity through them
- Materials that are good conductors generally have high conductivity
- Most metals are good conductors
3
Q
Properties of Insulators
A
- Insulators won’t allow the free flow of electrons from one atom to another
- They insulate electricity because of the tightly bound electrons present within atom
- They cannot pass electricity through them
- Materials that are good insulators generally have low conductivity
Example of insulators are glass, plastic and rubber
4
Q
Factors that affect the rate of conduction
A
it increases by:
- increasing the temperature gradient (temperature gradient)
- decreasing distance between particles (distance)
- increasing surface area (surface area)
5
Q
the effect of temperature on density on fluid
A
