Columbian Exchange
The transfer of ideas, biological life, and culture as a result of Europeans colonizing after Columbus’s journey.
Conquistadores
Spanish colonizers of the Americas. They took over existing Empires such as the Mayas and Aztecs.
Smallpox
A European disease that wiped out most of the native population.
Maize
Corn, a crop that originated in the americas.
Cacao
Large beans cultivated by the Mayans, which were the source of chocolate. The beans were also used as currency.
Sugarcane
A plant in which sugar is made.
Transatlantic slave trade
A slave trade from Africa to the Americas, facilitated mostly by the Europeans.
Engenho
Brazilian sugar mills, it symbolized the sugar industry.
Cash crop
A crop that is made specifically to sell, not used for farmer consumption.
African Diaspora
Name given to the spread of African peoples across the Atlantic through the slave trade.
Creole language
A language that forms from a simplified version of another language, or the mix of two or more languages.
Gumbo
A stew was brought to the Americas by African slaves.
