Industrial Revolution
A movement of rapid industrialization across the globe, including the development of new machinery and factory work.
Industrialization
The rapid expansion of machinery and factories. This also includes the mass production of goods.
Agricultural revolution
The rapid advancement of agricultural techniques and goods across the world.
Crop rotation
The innovation where farmers would rotate crops across multiple fields to restore and keep nutrients in the soil.
Seed drill
A machine that allowed farmers to plant seeds underground easily, producing more crops.
Cottage industry
An industry where goods would be made from someone’s own house, and they would manufacture the goods from their own home.
Spinning jenny
A machine that reduced the time needed to spin yarn and weave cloth.
Water frame
A machine that reduced the time needed to spin yarn and weave cloth. It used the power of a fast-paced stream or river.
James Hargreaves
The inventor of the spinning jenny.
Richard Arkwright
The inventor of the water wheel. He made factories possible and is also known as the first millionaire.
Factory system
It was the new system where people would leave their homes to go to work every day to manufacture goods.
Eli Whitney
A man who invented the use of interchangeable parts.
Interchangeable parts
All parts were made the same so that it was easier and less costly to replace.
Division of labor
Skilled laborers were no longer needed to craft everything.
Specialization of labor
A person would only be trained in one thing, and they would always do this. It would allow manufacturers to pay less because they didn’t need much skill to do their very specific job.
