Topic 8.1.6 - Human Systems and Resource Use Flashcards
Explain the demographic transition model
Stage 1, pre-industrial society: high CBR – lack of family planning – and high CDR – lack of technology – giving a low NIR.
Stage 2, industrialisation: as technology is introduced, CDR declines and CBR remains the same. NIR is significantly higher.
Stage 3, industrialised: as technology is thriving and being rapidly innovated CDR still declines, as well as CBR because of contraceptives being available. NIR is initially high as there is a large gap between CBR and CDR, but as they equalise the NIR declines.
Stage 4, post industrial: low CBR and low CDR; low NIR.
Stage 5, post post industrial: CDR exceeds CBR due to lifestyle changes – lack of exercise – making the population aged.
