Treatment Endocrine Dysfunction Flashcards

1
Q

Diabetes

A
  • Biggest challenge Aussie health system
  • Affects 1.7 million
  • affects entire body
  • self care daily
  • can’t maintain healthy levels glucose in blood
  • insulin no longer produced/not enough
  • role insulin stimulates cells take in glucose from blood
  • no cure(mange effectively)

Type Two diabetes

A
  • develop over age 45
  • able produce insulin but cells don’t respond
  • lifestyle (not physically active, overweight/obese)
  • cells don’t respond insulin, don’t take glucose from blood
  • cause~heart disease, stroke, eye problems, nerve damage,skin/foot problems
  • body building insulin resistance unable covert glucose to energy

Q

Treatment of insulin

A

Injections

  • insulin=hormone made by pancreas allows body use glucose in from food that you eat energy/ store
    - helps keep blood sugar levels from too high (hyperglycaemia) too low (hypoglycaemia)

Q

Risk of using insulin

A
  • Lead weight gain-type two bad
  • Allergic reaction/infections- causing swelling itching ect.
  • infections (through disposable needle)
  • drug interactions~ potential negative interaction other medication taking over the counter drugs/ dietary supplements
  • heart disease, stroke, eye problems, nerve damage, skin&foot problem

Q

Disorders of thyroid gland

A
  • thyroid gland located in neck
    -secretes two hormones~thyroxine and
    Tri-iodothyronine
    -same effect, major form thyroxine
-thyroxine~ affects nearly every tissue in body, stimulating carbohydrates, protein and fat metabolism
-secretes thyroxine from thyroid gland regulates basal metabolic rates
-some energy released from chemical reactions stimulated by thyroxine in form heat, important maintain body temp
-secretion thyroxine controlled, thyroid-stimulating hormone, secreted anterior lobe of picture kitty but release controlled hypothalamus in brain
-excess of deficiency thyroxine causes disorders
-imbalance thyroxine can due imbalance TSH

Q

Thyroid glands: Hyperthyroidism

A
  • too much thyroxine- thyroid gland produce to much
  • common type Graves’ disease
  • enlargement thyroid caused immune system reaction
  • not inherited, be genetic predisposition
  • symptoms rapid heartbeat, weight loss, increased appetite, sweating anxiety

Q

Thyroid glands: Hypothyroidism

A
  • too little thyroxine, more common
  • occurs problem with thyroid disease/ due problems pituitary gland or hypothalamus
  • symptoms~ slow heart rate, unexplained weight gain, fatigue, lack energy ect.
  • 1 thyroid gland due lack iodine-thyroxine molecule contain 4 iodine atoms (T4) & Tri-iodothyronine molecule 3 atoms iodine(T3). Deficiency, iodine diet, prevents thyroid gland making enough hormones
  • then become enlarged in effort increase hormone production-Goitre
  • if pregnant affect baby’s brain & retards physical development

Q

Treatment Thyroid glands (general)

A
  • Tablet=Levothyroxine synthetic form T4(can cause heart disease)
  • Tablets made from dried and peered thyroid glands animals, pigs, contain thyroid hormones T3 T4 not same proportions produced thyroid gland in humans
  • Today, treated hormones made synthetically by chemical process

Q

Treatment thyroid gland- hyperthyroid

A
  • Drugs block thyroid gland use of iodine
  • surgery remove some/or gland
  • patient drink radioactive iodine, taken up by thyroid glands, killed by radioactivity, cells elsewhere in body not absorb iodine unaffected, eventually excreted in urine

16
Q

Risk of thyroid gland

A
  • due toxic, elevated levels thyroid hormone
  • chest pain
  • increased heart rate/pulse
  • excessive sweating
  • heat intolerance
  • nervousness
  • headache
  • insomnia
  • diarrhoea
  • vomiting
  • weight loss
  • fever
  • if left untreated greater risks-cardiovascular problems, renal complications, nerve damage
17
Q

Benefits thyroid glands

A
  • increased levels energy
  • lower cholesterol levels
  • lower triglyceride levels
  • improved mood and mental function
18
Q

Ethical concerns thyroid glands

A
  • tablets made from dried powered thyroid animals glands pigs
  • still available-concerns certain religions or vegetarians
  • or synthetically by chemical process-some believe should interact gods creation ect
19
Q

Menopause

A
  • ends woman reproductive life
  • eggs no longer realised by ovary
  • production oestrogen and progesterone ceases
  • menopause~ refer last menstrual period of a woman
  • woman no periods 12 congestive months considered post-menstrual
  • 45-55 years
  • May experience dry skin, sensation crawling under skin, dry vagina, joint and muscle aches-due long levels oestrogen
  • uses oestrogen replacement therapy
20
Q

Menopause treatment

A

Many types replacement hormone therapy

-replace hormones a women loses during menopause

21
Q

Menopause treatment- oestrogen only Therapy

A
  • normal people done hysterectomy
  • only need oestrogen
  • available: tablets, skin patches, gels
22
Q

Menopause treatment- combined menopausal hormone therapy

A
  • must have intact uterus
  • oestrogen and progesterone
  • oestrogen available:tablets, skin patches,gels
  • progesterone: mostly orally, patches and cream not reliable
23
Q

Menopause treatment- tibolone

A
  • Oestrogen(brain, bone, vaginal tissues), progesterone (uterus), testosterone (mood, libido)
  • oral hormone
24
Q

Risk of menopause replacement hormones

A
  • (oestrogen only) increased blood clots
  • oral oestrogen increase risk stroke
  • oral increased risk gallbladder inflammation
  • often depend age and route administration
  • (tibolone) increase risk stroke, breast cancer
  • (combined menstrual hormone therapy)breast, cancer, stroke, venous thromboembolism
25
Q

Benefits of hormone therapy menopause- combined menopausal hormone therapy

A
  • most effective treatment, hot flushes, night sweats
  • treats vaginal dryness
  • reduces menopausal symptoms
  • reduces risk post menopause bone fractures
  • no weight gain
26
Q

Benefits of hormone therapy menopause-oestrogen only therapy

A
  • reduce severity/frequency hoot flushes around 85%
  • improve sleep and quality of life
  • increase bone density
  • no weight gain
27
Q

Benefits of hormone therapy menopause- Tibolone

A
  • prevents bone loss
  • not increase breast density
  • decrease total and LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels
  • dresses HDL cholesterol
28
Q

Menopause ethical concerns

A
  • believe shouldn’t change what God wanted
  • unnatural substances ~ seen wrong
  • not natural made from body
29
Q

Treatment of Endocrine dysfunction

A

Human intervention control normal functioning of body, treat disorders influence quality of individual/society. Intervention carry risks and benefits plus ethical concerns
