- January 1919, 100, 000 Spartacist League communists took over Berlin as they wanted a revolution.
- Ebert relied on the Freikorps to crush the uprising, showing they were so unstable and weak that they need volunteer soldiers to defeat opposition.
- Lost them over 60 seats at the June 1920 elections
- Led to a reliance on the Freikorps which gave them a lot of power, later enabling the Kapp Putsch

- Communism lost popularity - main leaders, Karl Liebknech and Rosa Luxemburg, were shot, leaving the movement without leadership, and the movement struggled to recover without their leaders.
- In addition, after WW2 people wanted a stable and secure government, so gravitated away from the communist party as a result of the bloodshed and violence associated with the uprising, and towards the democratic Weimar Gov.
- This led to a decline in support for the communist party.
