Types of Conformity Flashcards
Define Conformity.
A form of social influence that results from exposure to the majority belief.
Define Compliance.
Publically going along with another’s beliefs to gain their approval or avoid their disapproval.
Define Identification.
Temporarily going along with others because you have accepted their point of view through a desire to be like them. (only whilst in contact with the person whose beliefs you’ve accepted).
Define Internalisation.
Going along with others because you have accepted their point of view publicly and privately.
What’s the difference?
You are more likely to comply in a situation in which you want to fit in/be accepted whereas you may internalise ideas about how to respond in certain situations or beliefs about life.
