Q

Single phase connection
Standard power outlets have a nominal voltage of 120V.
They have 2 terminals, what are they?

Power outlets also have a third terminal, what is it?

A

1 –> connects to “hot” phase, i.e. one phase of the a.c. power grid supplying an alternating voltage with rms value of 120 V at ±5%.
2 –> connects to “neutral” phase at zero volts

Third one is GROUND that is only used during appliance malfunction
