What are the four types of shock?
1) Hypovolemic
2) Distributive
3) Cardiogenic
4) Obstructive
What are the sign’s of hypovolemic shock?
Tachycardia
Hypotension
tachypnea
What is hypovolemic shock?
A reduction in the amount of circulating fluid, which prevents adequate oxygenation to the tissues and cells.
What is hemorrhagic shock?
Shock due to significant blood loss. Internal or external bleeding.
What is distributive shock?
Shock as a result of fluid loss into the “third space” or interstitial space. As a result of DILATED blood vessels and LEAKING capillaries.
Name two types of Distributive shock.
Sepsis
anaphylaxis
neurogenic
toxic shock
What is septic shock?
Shock as a result of a massive systemic inflammatory response to infection by bacteria, fungi, or virus.
What are three signs of Septic shock?
Temperature greater than 100F or lower than 97F
Tachycardia (greater than 90bpm)
Tachypnea (greater than 20bpm)
Anaphylaxis, is what?
A severe allergic reaction. Caused by extreme histamine release and severe hypotension.
What is neurogenic shock?
Shock spurred with injury to the spinal cord above T6 interrupting signal transmission in the sympathetic nervous system.
What are some signs of neurogenic shock?
Bradycardia
warm pink skin
Hypotension
What is cardiogenic shock?
When blood is no longer effectively pumped because of a diminished stroke volume or a heart rate that is too slow or too fast. USUALLY CAUSED BY A STRUCTURAL FAILURE IN THE HEART.
