relate to persons type of work and include a sense of achievement, recognition, challenging work, responsibility and opportunities for advancement
lockes goal setting theory
establishment of clear, challenging goals as a way to motivate staff and improve their performance
in order to motivate, goals must be clear and specific and provide a challenge for all employees

- goals must be challenging but not overwhelming
- goals must be specific
- positive feedback is given along the way
- goals are set collaboratively ~ employee is involved in setting their own goals
