What is water stress?
Occurs when the water available is not sufficient to meet the needs of the population or is of a poor quality.
What is a water surplus?
Areas with the most rainfall and have lower population densities.
Example: west of the Uk
What is a water deficit?
Areas that have the least rainfall but higher population densities.
Example: East of the Uk
why is global demand for energy increasing?
- rising population
- wealth - people getting riche means there is a higher demand for energy for appliances and computers
- agricultural - farming requires huge quantities of energy - to power machinery, lighting and heating
what are the benefits of importing food from abroad?
- cheaper
- out of season foods - can be sold all year round
- access to exotic foods
what are the issues of importing foods from abroad?
- bigger food miles
- land used to grow food abroad, cant be used to grow fruit for the local people
- workers paid low wages
- could impact uk farmers
what are food miles?
the distance that food travels from producer to consumer.
what is carbon footprint?
the measure of impact that human activacties have on the environment in terms on the amount of greenhouse gasses they produce
how do you reduce carbon footprint of food?
- eat seasonal produce grown in the UK
- eat locally produced food, reduces the amount of food miles
- grow food at home or in an allotment
