Simile
A comparison between two things using ‘like’ or ‘as’.
Metaphor
A direct comparison between two things. One thing is another.
Personification
Giving human-like qualities to a non-human thing.
Hyperbole
An over-exaggeration to emphasise an emotion or a description.
Idiom
A common phrase or expression that has a different meaning to what it literally says.
Onomatopoeia
Words that create the sound they are representing or describing.
Alliteration
When the same consonant (non-vowel) sound is repeated at the start of multiple words.
Assonance
The repetition of vowel sounds in multiple words.
Repetition
The repetition of words for effect.
Rhyme
When words end with the same sounds. Usually used in poetry.
Consonance
The repetition of consonant (non-vowel) sounds within multiple words.
Euphemism
A polite way of expressing something impolite, distressing, or distasteful.
Jargon
Technical terms that are related to a specific knowledge area (e.g. a job or subject)
Pun
A play on words with similar meanings or sounds.
Colloquial Language
Casual, everyday language used in conversation.
