Unit 1: 2.6: The Periodic Table Flashcards
An organization of elements by increasing atomic number with elements having similar chemical properties aligned in vertical columns.
periodic table
Which group of elements are not found in any naturally occurring compounds?
noble gasses
One of the seven horizontal rows in the periodic table
period
In the periodic table, a column that includes elements with similar chemical properties; a family.
group
A metal in group 1 (1A) of the periodic table- Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, and Fr.
alkali metals
A metal in group 2 (2A) of the periodic table- Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra
alkaline earth metals
An element of the periodic group 11 (1B)- Cu, Ag, or Au.
coinage metals
An element of periodic group 17 (7A)- F, Cl, Br, I, or At.
halogens
An element in the far right column of the periodic table, group 18 (8A)- He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, or Rn
noble gasses
An element in groups 1, 2, and 13-18 (1A-8A) in the period table
main group elements
Any elements in groups 3-12 having atomic numbers 21-30, 39-48, 57, 72-80, or 104-112 and designated with B in the classical group naming system.
transitions elements
A collective term for the lanthanoids and actinoids.
inner transitions elements
Another term for transition element, because all of the transition elements are metals.
transition metals
An element on the left of the stepped line in the periodic table, or a mixture of such elements. They tend to be solids at room temperature, conduct heat and electricity, and are malleable and ductile.
metals
Hydrogen or any element to the right of the stepped line in the periodic table. When they are solid at room temperature, they tend to be brittle and nonconducting. Many of them are gases at room temperature.
