Unit 1: Intro to Science Flashcards
science
knowledge of the physical world and it’s phenomena
How does depth affect water temperature?
What is the test/experimental group?
water temperatures taken at different depths
scientific inquiry
the diverse ways in which scientists study the natural world and propose explanations based on the evidence they gather- consists of 6 steps
steps of scientific inquiry
- pose a question
- develop a hypothesis
- design an experiment
- collect and interpret data
- draw conclusion
- communicate results
scientific theory
A well-tested hypothesis- an explanation based on supportive data from repeated experiments; may be modified or discarded if proven incorrect by future testing
scientific law
describes an observed pattern in nature; remains unchanged under the same conditions; considered a rule of nature
controlled experiment
an experiment in which only one variable is changed at a time
parts of a controlled experiment
variable, independent variable, dependent variable, constant, control group, and experimental group
variable
any factor that changes in an experiment
dependent variable
the factor that changes in response to a change in the independent variable
independent variable
the one factor that a scientist changes in an experiment
constant
any factor in an experiment that does not change
control group
standard for comparison
experimental group
group of subjects that are exposed to the independent variable
the effect of fertilizer on the growth rate of plants
list the independent variable, dependent variable, control group, experimental groups, and at least three constants
independent variable: amount of fertilizer
dependent variable: growth rate of the plants
control group: 0 tbsp/week
experimental groups: 1 tbsp/week, 2 tbsp/week, 3 tbsp/week
constants: species of plants, same size, and same soil
