Unit 1: Prevention and Care of Injury Flashcards
Sprains vs Strains
A sprain is when a ligament is stretched or torn, a strain is when a muscle or tendon is stretched or shortened forcefully.
Contusions
Contusions (bruises) are common soft tissue injuries. They are a result of a blow that damages tissue and capillaries and causes loss of fluid and blood.
Punctures
Narrow stab wounds to skin or internal organs.
Abrasions
Injuries caused by scraping to the outer layer of tissue.
What is the most common injury? How many happen per day?
Sprained ankle, 27,000 a day.
Why is it easy for injuries to reoccur?
The injured part never goes back to how it was originally, so that part is more susceptible to injuries.
What causes pain in injuries?
Swelling
What is cartilage?
It covers the ends of bones and reduces shock and friction.
Where do cartilage tears often occur?
The knee
3 type of concussion
Mild (grade 1), moderate (grade 2), and severe (grade 3).
Mild concussion
No loss of consciousness, feeling dazed, symptoms last less than 15 minutes.
Moderate concussion
No loss of consciousness, symptoms last longer than 15 minutes.
Severe concussion
Loss of consciousness and delayed return to normal. See doctor immediately.
Three types of cuts
Lacerations, incisions, avulsions.
Laceration
A jagged soft tissue cut caused by a blow from a blunt object.
