Trait
A characteristic pattern of behavior or a disposition to feel and act, as assessed by self-report inventories and peer reports
Personality Inventory
A method of personality assessment based on a questionnaire asking a person to report feelings or reactions in certain situations.
Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Test
(MMPI) - assesses personality traits; used on those who may be mentally ill
Empirically Derived Test
A test developed by testing a pool of items and then selecting those that discriminate between groups
Social-Cognitive Perspective
Views behavior as influenced by the interaction between people’s traits and their social context
Reciprocal Determination
The environment, personal factors, and behavior work together to cause human action and changes in behavior.
Personal Control
the perception that one has the ability, resources, or opportunities to get positive outcomes or avoid negative effects through one’s own actions
External Locus of Control
The perception that chance or outside forces beyond our personal control determine our fate
Internal Locus of Control
The perception that you control your own fate
Self-Control
ability to manage one’s impulses, emotions, and behaviors to achieve long-term goals
Learned Helplessness
The hopelessness and passive resignation an animal or human learns when unable to avoid repeated aversive events
Positive Psychology
focuses on the positive aspects of human life, such as happiness, strengths, and fulfillment, rather than solely on pathology and mental illness
Self-concept
All our thoughts and feelings about ourselves, in answer to the question, “Who am I?”

Overestimating others’ noticing and evaluating our appearance, performance, and blunders

is confidence in one’s own worth or abilities.
