the US sold weapons to Iran in exchange for their promise to pressure terrorists in lebanon to release american hostages. it did not work and contradicted reagans promise not to negotiate with terrorists, but the US took the money made from this and funded contras, which congress had banned. multiple of his aides were arrested for the scandal, but were eventually released on technicalities.

A

the US supported a right wing group that was working against leftist rebels in El Salvador. congress made funding for El Salvador’s government dependent on human rights advanced to make them better. leftist rebels in Grenada overthrew the prime minister, and the US invaded the island to prevent it from becoming a communist outpost.

what was the bombing of the marine barracks in Lebanon

A

Reagan sent marines to Lebanon to bring peace to the nation which was in a civil war. a truck loaded with explosives ran through the barriers at the headquarters of the marines in Beirut and crashed into a four story building that housed hundreds of military officials. 241 marines were killed, and reagan withdrew the remaining troops within 4 months. this showed the complicated and dangerous nature of middle eastern politics

special prosecutor starr was hited to investigate investments the clintons mad ein whitewater development corp. he didnt find anything suspicious but did find that clinton had an affair and lied about it under oath. he admitted he lied and starr recommended impeachment on the grounds of the affair. most americans condemned the actions of clinton but did not agree with impeachment. he was impeached but acquitted.

chinese students staged a pro democracy protest in the square. chinese tanks killed hundreds of protestors and crushed the demonstration and imprisoned pro democracy activists. americans hoped this protest would cause the fall of communist china. Bush condemned chinas actions and suspended arms sale but kept diplomatic and economic relations.

A

the south african government controlled by white people maintained an oppressive and rigid system of segregation called apartheid. nelson mandela was the leader of the antiapartheid movement and elected leader after the apartheid was broken up and democratic elections were allowed. in the US private firms withdrew investments (divested) from south africa. congress imposed economic sanctions rather than fully divesting to ensure the country would not be destabilized. bush met with mandela and supported the democratic movement

casted himself as a new democrat. new democrats were centrists who sought to reconcile conservatives and liberals. the wanted strong national defense, strong stance against crime, welfare reform, and closer ties with corps. he believed the government was necessary but it had gotten too large and too ineffective

the persian gulf war

A

saddam hussein in iraq invaded kuwait for oil. the US feared what Hussein would do with the power that the oil reserves gave him, so bush organized a multinational coalition force that stationed in saudi arabia to protect the oil reserves there. the force launched a bombardment on iraq, who then sent missiles to the force and to nearby israel. the force then invaded kuwait and the iraqi soldiers fled, losing kuwait. this was called operation desert storm. afterwards, iraq agreed to a ceasefire

they exploded a truck in a parking lot of the world trade center and killed 6, injuring 1000+. they exploded car bombs at 3 US embassies in african countries, injuring 5500 and killing 225. the bombed the uss cole, an american worship anchored off yemen, killing 17. osama bin laden was the leader of al qaeda, his goal was to end US involvement in muslim countries.
