Unit 16 Flashcards
Ca
CALCIUM:
> Maintains strong bones
> Helps carry out many important functions
> Most calcium is stored in the bones and teeth, where it supports structure and hardness.
Fe
IORN:
> Deficiency limits oxygen delivery to cells
Excess iron causes toxicity and death
K
POTASSIUM:
> Mineral
> Helps nerves and muscles communicate
> Helps put nutrients in cells and waste out
> Can help offset sodium which causes blood pressure issues
Sources:
Na
SODIUM:
> Controls blood pressure and blood volume
> Needed for muscles and nerves to work
2 hr pp
2 hour post-prandial (meal) blood glucose test
> Measures the body’s ability to metabolize carbohydrates and produce insulin
Can diagnose diabetes and confirm, also help with diet and medication ideas for diabetes.
BMP
Basic metabolic panel Shows: (drown through vein in the arm) > status of kidneys > electrolyte and acid/base balance > level of blood glucose
BS
Blood sugar:
> used for diabetes
> electronic device that reads sugar in a drop of blood
FBS
Fasting blood sugar:
> amount of sugar in your blood after 8 hours of starvation
> baseline glucose value
GTT
Glucose tolerance test:
> tests for type II diabetes
T3
Thyroid test (triiodothyronine):
> Taken as a follow up to a TSH or T4 test
> To diagnose hyperthyroidism
T4
Thyroid test (thyroxine):
> Diagnose hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism
> Done due to an abnormal TSH
TSH
Thyroid-stimulating hormone:
> Checks for thyroid problems
> TSH causes thyroid glad to make T3 and T4 which is used for metabolism and growth of the brain (especially during the first 3 years of life)
DM
Diabetes mellitus:
> pancreas no longer produces insulin or cells don’t respond to insulin, so glucose cannot be absorbed into the body
Type 1
known as juvenile diabetes or insulin dependent diabetes
Type II
known as adult diabetes or non-insulin dependent diabetes
