Unit 2 Flashcards
Ion
An atom with the same number of protons but different number of electrons; thus having a different charge
Isotope
An atom with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons and thus a different mass number
Atom
The smallest unit of an element that still shares it’s chemical and physical properties
Endothermic
The flow of heat energy into a system
Exothermic
the flow of heat energy out of a system
System
Everything inside the thing being observed
Surrounding
Everything outside the thing being observed
Absolute Zero
The temperature at which there is no more particle movement
Protons
the subatomic particle that contributes to the mass of an atom and is found at the nucleus of an atom with a positive charge; positive charge
neutrons
a subatomic particle that contributes to the mass of an atom and is found at the Nucleus of an atom with a zero charge; zero charge
Electrons
a subatomic particle that contributes to the volume of an atom and is found in orbit around atoms with a negative charge; negative charge
Element
from the periodic table; a pure substance
Homogenous Mixture
completely dissolved, you can not tell them apart; a mixture
Heterogeneous Mixture
not completely dissolved, you can see it apart; a mixture
Chemical Change
compounds or elements change arrangement; indicated by a change in color
