Unit 2 Flashcards
What is soil made of
Soil is made out of force things minerals a bacteria and organic materials air and moisture
What are the layers of soil
O horizon A horizon E horizon B horizon C horizon R horizon
O horizon is the top layer of organic soil
A horizon is the topsoil and ant roots
E sand minerals and clay
B horizon is subsoil contains clay minerals deposits
c horizon is regolith made of slightly broken up bedrock very little organic material
A horizon is the bed rock bottom layer
What are the layers of the earth
Core made of nickel, solid and hotter than the surface of the sun
Outer core liquid core
Mantle rocky mantle made of somica (silicon, oxygen, magnesium, aluminum) it also contains a majority of the earths mass.
What is Pangaea
Pangaea was once a supercontinent
What are the types of plate movements
Divergence, convergence and lateral slipping
What does divergence convergence and lateral slipping mean
Divergence the seafloor spreading and is the movements of to oceanic plates moving away from each other which results in new oceanic crust this is called a zone of divergence
Convergent plate movement is when two plates collide some crust is destroyed in the impact
Lateral slipping is when two plates move sideways against each other creating friction which makes earthquakes
What is continental drift
Continental drift is when the continent started to drift apart during does cretaceous period
What is the earths crust and surface made of
The earths crust is made of salt basalt and granite
The earths surface is made of silicon aluminum calcium sodium and potassium
What happens when 2 of the same plates collide
Went to oceanic plates collide one is pushed under causing magnetize and the volcano to form
12 continental plates a mountain range is formed
When an oceanic and continental plates collide the oceanic is forced under the continental this is called subduction
What does Lithosphere mean
The crust plus is the Ridgid upper mantle
what are the properties of soil
Soil is made up of four parts minerals bacteria and organic minerals air and moisture
What are the vegetation regions
The vegetation regions are Tundra Boreal and taiga Mixed forest Deciduous forest Grassland Cordilleran vegetation West coast forest
What are some characteristics of the tundra region
The tundra region has few stunted trees it is covered and permafrost that Sauza during summer it is very cold there is very little precipitation and there is very little hummus
What are some characteristics of the boreal and taiga forest
Coniferous trees it is slightly warmer than the tundra region more precipitation in the tundra the hummus is very shallow and the topsoil is gray
What are some characteristics about the mixed forest
Coniferous and deciduous harsh climate and well-suited for farming
