Unit 2 - Chemistry of Life Flashcards
Atom
The smallest basic unit of matter
Element
One particular type of atom
Ex. ( Gold (Au) and Oxygen, Hydrogen)
Compound
A substance made of atoms of different elements
Ex. ( H2O and CO2)
Ion
An atom that has gained or lost one or more electrons. When an atom is more stable when its outermost energy level is full
Ex. (
Ionic bond
Forms when through electrical force between oppositely charged ions
Covalent bond
Forms when atoms share a pair of electrons
Hydrogen bond
An attraction between a slightly positive hydrogen atom and a slightly negative hydrogen atom
Molecule
Two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds
Ex. (O2)
Cohesion
The attraction between molecules of a substances
Adhesion
The attraction between molecules of different substances
Solution
The mixture of substances that is the same throughout
Solvent
The substance that is present in the greater amount and that dissolves another substance
Solute
A substance that dissolves in a solvent
Acid
A compound that releases a proton, a hydrogen ion (H+) when it dissolves in water. It increases the concentration of H+ ions in a solution
Base
A compound that removes hydrogen ions (H+) when a base dissolves in water.the solution has a low H+ concentration
