Unit 2: Eukaryotic Membrane-Enclosed Components Flashcards
what is the endoplasmic reticulum (ER)
network of membrane tube within the cytoplasm
types of ER?
- Rough ER (contains ribosomes)
- Smooth ER (no ribosomes)
Rough ER functions
packaging of newly synthesized proteins
Smooth ER functions
detoxification and lipid synthesis
what is the Golgi complex?
flattened membrane sacs.
Golgi complex functions
- correct folding
- chemical modification of newly synthesized proteins
- packaging for protein trafficking
what is a secretory vesicle?
membrane-bound organelle that transports materials from one part of the cell to another.
what is the mitochondria?
double-membrane organelle, that produces ATP.
what is a lysosome?
membrane-enclosed sac that contains hydrolytic enzymes, to break down substances.
what is a vacuole?
membrane-bound sacs that store water and macromolecules and release waste from the cell.
what is a chloroplast?
double-membraned organelle that captures sunlight and converts it into sugar (through photosynthesis).
