UNIT 3 - AOS 1 DEFINITIONS Flashcards
Amino Acids
Molecules that combine to make a protein
Biological Macromolecule
Large molecules (lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acid) necessary for life that are built from smaller organic molecules
Condensation Polymerisation
Monomers react with each other to form a larger structural units while releasing a smaller molecule as a byproduct such as water
Monomer
A monomer is a smallmolecule that reacts with a similar molecule to form a larger molecule.
Polymers
Polymers are molecules made from a large number of similar units (monomers) bonded together
Peptide
A short string of amino acids. Usually made up of two of more amino acids. There are several types of peptides including dipeptide and polypeptide
Dipeptide
A molecule consisting of two or more amino acids bonded together through peptide bonds
Polypeptide
A molecule consisting of numerous amino acids bonded together through peptide bonds
