What are simple carbohydrates?
Glucose and sugar
What are complex carbohydrates?
Pasta, bread and rice
What is dehydration?
The rapid loss of water from the body
What is malnutrition?
A physical weakness resulting from insufficient food or an unbalanced diet.
What is obesity?
A condition of being extremely fat or overweight, which frequently results in health problems.
What is anorexia?
An eating disorder primarily occurring in girls and women, related to a fear of gaining weight, self-starvation and a distorted body image.
What it basal metabolic rate?
The minimum rate of energy required to keep all of the life processes of the body maintained when it is at rest.
What is glycogen?
A form of carbohydrate storage, which is converted into glucose as needed by the body to satisfy its energy needs.
What is carbohydrate loading?
Eating plenty of starch-rich foods, pasta, in the week before an important competition or event.
Who is carbohydrate loading designed for?
Athletes, mainly marathon runners.
How does carbohydrate loading decrease tiredness and improve performance?
Starch increases the amount of glycogen in the muscles, this improves end stages of performance as it is a slow realise form of energy.
Who is high-protein diets designed for?
Body builders as a means of building muscle and losing fat.
