Q

What is Margin of Safety?

A

The need for something built or manufactured to preform as expected for a long time so that people’s safety and health are not at risk. In a structure our margin safety would ensure that the structure has extra strength to support more load then normal. Example- a elevator

Q

What are Rigid Joints?

A

Are joints that attach the thousands of tiny parts in a structure.

17
Q

What are Fasteners?

A

Examples of fasteners are nails, staples, bolts, screws, etc are types of rigid joints but can weaken a structure cause of the holes the fasteners make. They can crack and separate the material.

18
Q

What are Interlocking Shapes?

A

Are carefully shaped parts that hold themselves together. Examples- Lego bricks, paving stones, etc.

19
Q

What are Ties?

A

Threads, strings, and rope can fasten things together which are Ties.

20
Q

What are Adhesives?

A

Sticky substances like glue that can hold things together. When the glue hardens it holds the pieces together. But glues can soften in water and in hot temperatures. If the glue is stronger than the substance it joins then the material next to the joint will break.

21
Q

What is the process of Melting things?

A

Pieces of metal and plastic was be melted together. This is called Welding. Soldering surrounds pieces with a different melted material.
