Unit 5 Flashcards
What is the function of hair?
To regulate body temperature, protect the skin, and act as a sensory organ.
Hair consists of 2 main constructs
The shaft and the Folicle
What determines whether hair is individual or class evidence?
If the follicle is attached it is individual evidence, if not it is class evidence.
What are the 3 layers that make up the shaft.
The cortex, the medulla, and the cuticle.
What are the 3 stages of the hair life cycle?
Anagen, catagen, and telogen.
What can hair analysis determine?
What region of the body the hair came from, the color, the racial background, human or animal origin, the medulla pattern, the cuticle pattern, a history of drug use and toxins, and the DNA.
What types of hair can be analyzed?
The head, eyebrows, eyelashes, beard, underarms, pubic area, and body.
How do you determine the species the hair belongs to?
By using the Medullary Index (MI).
What are the 5 medulla patterns?
Continuous, interrupted, fragmented, sulid, and none.
What are the 3 patterns of the cuticle layer?
Cornul, imbricate, and spinous.
What does Neuron activation analysis or NAA detect?
It can detect chemicals and toxins in hair.
What can fibers be classified as?
Fiber, yarn, or textile.
What are the types of weave patterns in textiles?
Plain, twill, and satin.
What are the 2 types of fibers?
Natural fibers and synthetic fibers.
What are the 3 types of natural fibers?
Animal fibers, plant fibers, and mineral fibers.
